Hopi Black Ogre Kachina circa 1970

This is a Hopi Black Ogre Kachina or Kasina. The black Ogre takes things from the villagers. Everything from the good corn harvest to someone’s dreams. It is never good to see the black ogre. He is used in ceremony to take things from other villages or people. This black ogre is missing a few front teeth and has had one of his blades that adorn his head replaced. Neither of these things takes away from this kachina at all. Standing an impressive 16 1/2 inches from base to blade he scares even me. Signed by the artist Alvin Navasie Sr. A master Kachina artist.
